San Diego Comic Con 2012 Update!

San Diego Comic Con update from writer: Ken Valesquez

My first day at the SDCC was long, awesome, heartfelt, fun, tiring and very rewarding. While I was not able to meet Geoff Johns and Jim Lee at the DC Entertainment booth, I was able to finally meet one of the coolest fans from this here page, JAMES BERRY.

The guy is without a doubt a dedicated fan of not just Superman but the arts in general. Cultured, knowledgeable, polite and a great person to talk to and socialize with. We stopped at the WB booth, and while they were showing mostly footage from THE HOBBIT on their giant screen, attention was drawn towards a certain item in a 7 foot glass case.

Believe me when I tell you all no picture to this date, no matter how close and enhanced, has done any justice to the MAN OF STEEL outfit. The highly textured material covering it has very intricate engravings on it only visible up close. The gold trim around the waist and "buckle" has very elegant carvings in them as well. Also, the "chain mail" material is black and overlayed the dark blue tights and even over the boots.

Superman's majestic cape looks heavy on the shoulders and back yet thin and suede like towards the bottom. My guess is that in order for it to move freely it has to hang tight on top and loose on the bottom. James and I spent a good ten minutes examining the best super hero suit on film since Batman's in Tim Burton's classic. MY opinion.

Before that I was standing in line to meet some of the cast members from the original MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS and had them sign my box set of the first three seasons. We walked by the HALO 4, RESIDENT EVIL 6 and ASSASSIN'S CREED booths.

From there we went to Artist Alley where we spoke to some awesomely gifted artists from the US and the world. A really cool booth was selling DC themed paper figures as well as tins. I got a Wonder Woman tin while James got himself Superman.

People in the most elaborate costumes are a major highlight of the Con and the young man dressed as DC's ghostly hero, DEADMAN, is the best. Please, do "like" his page on FB, PrologueOfADeadman, and see the fan film he's developing.

Marvel made some dumb announcements while DC was coy yet forthcoming with their slate of projects. James and I went our separate ways and my day ended with an amazing concert by the bay, THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: SYMPHONY OF THE GODDESSES.

The BOOM Page's Kenneth Vasquez live from San Diego Comic Con 2012!

Entry 1:

"Greetings Super Friends!!

Here I am at the VERY far rear of the San Diego Convention Center standing in line to wait for my badges. That exciting intense and almost magical feeling I always get when i attend this event is creeping up on me.

Had a surprisingly pleasant flight last night sitting right next to wrestler Dave Batista's agent. We talked about his career and his memorable appearance in Smallville Season 8 as a Phantom Zoner who consumes people's bone marrow. Because of my fandom over Batista I just might get to meet him this Friday.

Line will begin moving in about an hour so I'm off to eat breakfast on this here sidewalk and keep you fans posted as much as possible. I see a very nice Wonder Woman costume dear fans and you all know what that means...photo op!!

Entry 2:

I haven't stood in a line which wraps itself around the San Diego Convention Center since 2002. Ah, the memories. Can't wait to get in there and get lost in all the geeky goodness. More to follow once I get settled inside.

The story starts with Wolverine dealing with Cloak, another hero who has come to him for help because Sabretooth has kidnapped Cloaks partner Dagger. Wolverine insists its impossible for Sabretooth to be alive since he killed him himself, they travel to where he buried 'tooth's body to find it right where he left, severed head and all.

Mighty Marvel Monday for July 9th 2012

Hello true believers, its time again for Marvel Mondays! Where the BOOM Page Comics Book emporium goes over some great Marvel news and goodies in the world and on the web.

The Amazing Spider-Man hits $62 Million Dollars opening weekend! The midnight premiere brought in $7.3 million dollars alone! Its total for the first week, $137million dollars, that's a whole lot of Thwipps!
This opening is bigger than The Dark Knight, Superman Returns and the revamped Hulk. But is anyone really surprised, Spidey is by far one of the most popular super heroes in the industry and a more family friendly Spider-Man probably had a whole lot more younger viewers than the scratchy throat of the Dark Knight.

I, Vampire Review By Kenneth Vazquez

Its Wednesday which means its new comic book day, head to your local shop and pick up today's books!
In the mean time enjoy a review of DC Comics I,Vampire by BOOM Page writer Kenneth Alexander Wright Vazquez

DC Comics: I, Vampire Review

By Kenneth Alexander Wright Vazquez

Gothic horror is one of the genres that I gravitate to as much as sci fi and fantasy if not more. That's why of all the non super hero books released within DC Comics company wide relaunch "The New 52" the one that I personally enjoy most is the modern day retelling of 'I, VAMPIRE'.

Originally introduced in the pages of DC's 'The House of Mystery' #290 in March 1981, 'I, Vampire' told the tale of noble man turned vampire/vampire hunter Andrew Bennett and his lifetime pursuit of his fomer lover and renegade vampire Mary Seward. After a succesful run in the anthology format of the book Lord Bennett died defeating Mary Seward only to be restored to his undead self and placed back to sleep by Doctor Fate himself. No one knew if he would ever rise and walk the Earth again.

DC The New 52 Just isn't Doing it For Me

Yesterday was Marvel Monday here in The BOOM Page comic book section, we had a brief review of AvX Round 6, talked about some Spider-Man stuff and put up what books were coming out this week. Marvel Monday's are easy and fun for me to do, today I'd thought I'd do a DC day to be fair, but I'm having some problems.

The New 52 in where DC Comics has rebooted their entire comic book universe and started all books with a new number 1 just isn't doing it for me. I was an avid reader of DC comics, I collected JLA, all the Green Lantern Books, Detective Comics, occasionally some Action Comics and a few others. The Justice League was one of my favorite books for the longest time, then DC changed everything.

Now I am not against change or mixing things up a bit, but to take away a story and characters you were reading and making it different, well it just made it hard to stay with them. The only New 52 books I currently get each week are Green Lantern and Detective Comics. Those two seemed to be the ones least effected by the reboot and still contain the primary characters with the similar story to what I was following.

Now I know I should be open to new things, and some of the new artists and writers they've brought in for the new 52 are great. The whole thing was masterminded by Jim Lee, one of my favorite artists whose work on X-Men is legendary. But this new Justice League with Green Lantern being a really big jerk and Batman pretty much letting him just doesn't feel right.

Marvel comics had the right idea, they rebooted their universe as well and changed everything but they did so in what they call the Ultimate Universe. A series of titles about their characters like Spider-Man, The Avengers, X-Men but they're the Ultimate Avengers or Ultimate Spider-Man.They gave their readers a choice to see if they wanted to switch it up, the didn't just take everything you knew and dump it outside.

Its only 10 issues in, I'll pick up a book here and there, sometimes I wait to get the digital version of the book and only pay $1.99 per issue rather than the $3.99 normal cost, but for the most part my relationship with DC just isn't there.

So if there is someone out there who would like to be the official DC Comics correspondant for The BOOM page I happily invite you to send me a message, I'd love to welcome you to the staff.

Marvel Mondays! What's new in Marvel Comics Universe.

Avengers vs. X-Men Round 6 - This $@!* just got real!

Did you read AvX Round 6 that came out last week?! The X-Men have taken control of the Phoenix power, after Hope Summers rejected it when it came to her on the moon, five of the X-Men were given the power instead. Cyclops, Emma Frost, Namor, Magik and Colossus also known now as The Phoenix Five.

So did they bring mass chaos and destroy the world as Captain America and the rest of The Avengers predicted? No, in fact they are working towards ending world hunger, thirst, and attempting to make world peace. Oddly this doesn't sit well with The Avengers. You would think a group of heroes who are constantly fighting to save the planet would welcome other heroes to step in and help save the world. The Avengers and even the President of The United States feel that the X-Men are a danger and far too powerful to continue on in this manner.

New Avengers #27 Review - Two Iron Fists Up!

New Avengers #27 hit the stands today, written by Brian Michael Bendis, art by Mike Deodato and coloring by Rain Beredo, it ties into the Avengers Vs. X-Men story currently running through the Marvel Universe. The last several issues have been how the history of The Iron Fist and the city of Kun Lun tie to the Phoenix force.

The New Avengers is one of my favorite comics on the market today and when this story started I fully admit I was not a fan. They pulled away from the great characters that are normally in this book, Luke Cage, Spider-Man, The Thing, Wolverine, Daredevil and several others, this book is like the Oceans 11 of comics, every cool character from any book was on this team. To have a story that only focused on the legend of The Iron Fist, not even Danny Rand, it left me wanting more, but they were building me up to this issue. (Read on if you don't mind spoilers)

The Recent Spark of Gay Characters in Comics

Last week DC Comics announced they were making one of their main characters in their new reboot gay, the then 'came out' and said it was going to be Green Lantern. This of course sent the internet a buzz and those who know nothing about comics all in a tizzy that Ryan Reynolds character in Green Lantern is now gay.

However just like I did there, the teasing that a real main stream character like Hal Jordan, Green Lantern of space sector 2814 would now be a gay man is not the case. The gay green lantern will be Alan Scott, the Green Lantern of Earth 2 who is actually not even a green lantern. Sure he's accessorizing with his green power ring but its nothing like Hal's or any of the other thousands of green lanterns that make up the Green Lantern Corps.

Incredible Hulk failed to Roar

Incredible Hulk #8 came out this week, its the first part in the new story called Stay Angry written by Jason Aaron with art by Steve Dillon. The cover was done by Michael Komarck famed fantasy artist, known best for his work with Game of Thrones. The cover is drawn beautifully and depicts a battle between Frank Castle, The Punisher against the star of the book, The Incredible Hulk.

Sadly the beauty of that cover is where the artistic greatness stops, the inside by Dillon really doesn't play up that well. Dillon is a British artist, his style seems very similar to Frank Quitely a Scottish artist, maybe it something with the European artists that have this like style, but it doesn't translate well to The Hulk.

Dillon's probably best known for his work on a book from Vertigo called Preacher but he has had successful runs with Marvel comics as well on The Punisher; probably why he was hired to do this part of the story. While his depiction of Punisher is fine, the way in which he draws the Hulk is terribly wrong.  On the third page in of art there's a panel where the Hulk is taking on three men in a hotel room. He looks to be only a little over 6ft tall and maybe 250lbs? He wasn't even Lou Ferrigno big. The Hulk needs to always be a monster, huge, giant close to 8ft tall and massively large. To make him just slightly larger than a regular man is wrong.

The story isn't bad, Hulk finds out that when he calms down he reverts back to Banner, something that hasn't happened for quite some time and shouldn't be happening at all since (spoiler alert)  the last issue showed the death of Bruce Banner. But apparently now Banner is the crazed person we all have to worry about and Hulk is a well spoken green giant that will indeed help people out if they need it.

The villain in the story is a new comer, Pit-Bull, no he's not the Miami singer entertainer he's a dog man, seems mostly dog, but he walks up right and has human limbs, kind of like a Thundercat but doggy. Anyway he just seems stupid and forced, if you're a dog man how would you possibly become a drug lord, who would take you serious? I would think everyone would want to pet you, maybe play catch. Is his true arch nemesis the mail man? Its clear that the fact that he's some sort of hybrid will play a part in this story but why did he have to be the main villain? Its like the writer just thought it would be cool if he was a dog man so go ahead and make him be drug lord and we'll name him after Mr. Worldwide.

Another thing that bothered my inner smart geek, why is Hulk is still bald in this issue? Apparently its due to a gamma bomb going off in his face, but I would think his healing factor would cure baldness as well. He started the new book with shaggy hair and a beard and now he's all smooth and clean shaven, another point that just seems dumb to ignore. I suppose artist continuity when it comes to small things like this doesn't matter that much to most. To me its a thorn.

I started reading this new Hulk book primarily because of the artist that started it, Whilce Portacio, Whilce a Filipino artist has an amazing style, the best way to describe it is refined sketching. I was a huge fan of his in the 90s with his work on X-Factor, some truly great stuff.

Mr. Dillon taking over for Whilce has some big Hulk shoes to fill, and I'm not sure I like his European look to the characters. Thank fully it seems this story of Stay Angry is one writer and a different artist each issue. Next issue we get Pasqual Ferry, a Spanish comic book artist. I know it seems like I'm really focusing on where the artists are from, but one thing I've noticed as an artist, the region you're from has a great influence on your art, and other artists from that area usually tend to draw similar. Spanish comic artist in my opinion are some of the best, Humberto Ramos, Carlos Pacheco and others, all of them my personal favorites.

There are some good scenes in this book, I don't want to give it a total bad review, a scene in which Hulk was realizing he was calming down and was afraid he'd turn back into Banner got funny when he told the Punisher to repeadetly shoot him in the face, the Punisher of course complied.

If you're in your comic shop this week and you haven't picked up any of the new Hulk books I'd say go grab issues 1-7, they are truly great books and really expand the history and character of the Hulk in a great new way. Then once you've gotten those read go ahead and grab this one as well, I mean we have to find out what Banner's up to and lets hope next issue the Hulk gets a little bigger.

HULK BOOM!

Avengers vs. X-Men Sadly not an X-Men Story

Every year in Marvel comics there is a major event, Secret Invasions, Civil Wars, Skrulls, Kree, something and at the heart of all those crossovers 90% of the time are The Avengers, Marvel's premiere super hero team. This year Marvel brought in its mutants to the big event of the year the X-Men are finally a part of the big years crossover.

I personally am a huge X-Men fan, so when I heard that this was going to be the event of the summer I was incredibly excited and could not wait to start reading this story. Round 4 recently came out and its clearly a filler issue between big events. It was needed to establish characters places and give some insight to what the major players Hope, Wolverine, Captain America and Cyclops are doing.

The Avenger vs. X-Men books carry the main story, the side book that highlights specific fights has been going into details of one on one battles. The last book showcased Gambit vs. Captain America and Spider-Man vs. Colossus, neither fight was that spectacular and the Spidey vs. Colossus fight was down right bad.

In each teams respective books normally we would see a continuation of the continuity of the universe that's happening right now. In the Avengers books we are, we're seeing history of The Iron Fist connection in New Avengers. In Secret Avengers we had the away team in space to take on the Phoenix in a suicide mission. In the Avengers book we're seeing how this is tied to the Kree and one of its members may end up betraying the Avengers.

However over in the X-Men books we're not all dedicated to the current story, in X-Factor they're not even touching up on it and I might forgive that book but in X-Men #28 they had a story of Pixie fighting Skrulls. The book is called X-Men yet they aren't doing stories dedicated to the biggest X-Men story in years! Its the return of the Phoenix force and we don't get any thing tied to it? Bizarre. In Uncanny X-Force no Phoenix, in Wolverine, no Phoenix, how can we have all these main X-Men books and not tie to the major event of the year.

In Astonishing X-Men we are going to have a gay wedding between the B List character Northstar and his boyfriend, this should be a big event and it seems to be a trend that's happening in comics recently. Archie had a gay wedding, DC is going to have a current hero come out of the closet and Marvel is going to have a gay wedding in issue #51. An event like this should not be happening during the Avengers vs. X-Men story line, it should be its own stand alone type of thing and more than the X-Men should attend the wedding showing support from all the superheros for this event.

Being an X-Men fan I'm very sadly disappointed that the X-Men are being treated as the side characters in an Avengers story especially since that story completely revolves around The Phoenix force. The Avengers again are the golden children of the Marvel universe and the X-Men continue to be hated and feared by the rest of the world.

Rob Liefield seems to Never get Better

So I missed getting Uncanny X-Force #1 and then I go online and see that there are numerous versions of the book with different covers, and one is done by the man who was one of the original creators of the team Rob Liefeld, and all I can think is; HOW DON'T I HAVE A JOB IN THE COMICS INDUSTRY, HOW AFTER YEARS OF DRAWING HAS THE MAN NOT GOTTEN ANY BETTER. This is just terrible, I will most certainly not be getting this cover.

The X-Men and Me

Its no secret that I'm a fan of comic books, my dream is to one day be a freelance artist for a major company where I can do some stuff here and there, preferably for one of the two major groups. For those outside the comic loop the two big companies are Marvel and DC. Marvel is the home of Spider-Man, X-Men, The Avengers, Captain America and The Hulk to name a few. The DC 'universe' as its called is the home to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash and Green Lantern, as well as a whole slew of others.

10 Super Cool Dogs

Okay I have to say, my dog Sawyer is pretty cool; he's part wolfhound and part black lab, and he's been accused of also being part hell hound or demon dog. He's the only dog I've had that you can see his breath when he gets excited and pants and its fifty degrees outside! If you go to my You Tube page that you can get to from the side bar, you'll see some pretty cool Sawyer videos. Also, he's named after the character from Lost, not Tom Sawyer.

X-Men Cell Phone wallpaper

Guess who's got a new wallpaper for his cel phone.

Marvel.com has some great hidden art on their site.

Justice League Earth?

Okay wow, I continue to work on my art, and I worry about using to much reference material because I don't want to be labeled the guy who copies other peoples stuff. I NEVER TRACE, but I use Google all the time for different poses and such.

I've seen stuff on a show and said, ooo that would be cool. But I think its safe to say whoever drew this cover of the Justice League of America recently watched the "Life" special on Discovery channel. Paused his DVR and did a screen shot. I thought the chameleon they showed was cool too, but this guy must really have loved it.

Wizard World 2010 part 2

Last year my plan was to head to Wizard World and be a part of one of the biggest comic book events of the year. Due to complications beyond my control, I didn't make it, I had a whole video series up on You Tube entitled the Road to Wizard World and everything, but it just didn't happen at that time, which is probably a good thing.

Because this road trip turned out to be pretty fantastic, but it did require some research in order for it to get there. There is a formula to every great road trip film and we followed the formula as best as we could making sure we fulfilled key moments that needed to take place in order for the road trip to reach its full potential.

We had the main character on a quest, the best friend, the comic relief, and having two characters have a romance. We had one character left behind at home, a disaster slightly averted, we stopped at the casino to gamble $5 because then we filled that quota. Most of this wouldn't have even been possible if we had gone last year as the participants would have been different and age requirements would not have been met.

So we make it to Wizard World, and in my head I expected this gigantic mecca to comics and pop culture, however it wasn't, but thats fine because that fills the formula of road trip rules - #3 the trip turns out to be something you didn't think it was.
The show was definately geared more towards pop culture and celebrities than it was comics, the comic book portion was a bit small but the celebrities and the ease of getting to them far made up for the lack of books and comic all stars.

We walked in and immediately were in awe of some of the art we got to see and they had on display it was so cool, giant prints framed and just looking fantastic.
Alex Ross prints, Jim Lee, just great, great stuff.

We took not 20 steps and there was Mr. Ernie Hudson, Winston of Ghostbustuers and only about 100 different things from movies, and TV including The A-Team, Dukes of Hazzard, Batman the Animated Series, Superman the Animated Series, and so much more. I wanted so much to walk up to him and say "Tell him about the Twinkie" but I contained myself. I had hims sign my copy of The Crow and he talked about how it was a very emotional time for him and that he'll never forget that day. He was so nice, so and down to Earth and just not snobby celebrity at all.

The rest of the day just got better, between talking to the legendary Honky Tonk Man for 20 minutes or so about the Twilight movies, his life and his daughter and how she's talking to one of the actors in the twilight movies. Meeting Melody Anderson aka Dale Arden from the 1980 cult classic Flash Gordon, her I gushed over and told her I must have seen her movie about 100 times, and I did the little 'go flash go' and she gave us a little behind the scenes knowledge of the movie, that football scene that took place wasn't originally in the script. We met Hacksaw Jim Duggan, The Iron Shiek, Bushwaker Luke and Virgil all the legends of wrestling that I grew up with so cool, Duggan had hands like a catchers mitt and he couldn't have been nicer.

Another fantastic person we got to meet that day, movie star Doug Jones. He's been in so many huge projects and major motion pictures its just ridiculous. Pan's Labrynth, Hell Boy, Men in Black, Benchwarmers, Legion, heck he was Mac the Night from the old McDonalds commercials! He was just so nice, talked to us, was greatful for us loving his movies, and even gave big hugs! What a guy, truly just a nice person and was having a great time being there.

So while this was a fantastic trip, I'm looking it as the dress rehearsal, we are going to head back up to Canada in August and truly make a great road trip movie. In fact we are thinking of actually making it a You Tube movie, so stay tuned, who knows you may be in it.

Wizard World 2010

Last year you may remember a series of videos up at You Tube called The Road to Wizard World. I had them up at Buffalo.com as well, but due to a series of events we were unable to go to the comic convention.

Well this year we are on our way. As a matter of fact, this morning, as in right now.
